Dropshipping is a way to sell online without buying stock up front or packing parcels yourself. You list a supplier's products in your own online store, set your own price, and when a customer orders, the supplier ships the item directly to them. You earn the difference between your price and the supplier's price, and you spend your time on choosing products, building your brand and marketing.

On MultiVendor you connect your own supplier account under Products → Integrations. Today you can connect CJdropshipping, search its catalog, import products as drafts and price them with your own rules — percentage markup, profit margin or fixed profit, minimum profit, rounding and payment fees — and see the estimated profit before you publish. BigBuy accounts can be connected and checked, with catalog import next. Automatic order forwarding and tracking arrive with online checkout. It works for single stores and for multi-vendor marketplaces, where each seller connects their own supplier account, with no commission on your sales.

You don't have to wait to start selling. Today you can open an online store or start a marketplace with your own products, digital downloads, online courses and events, and you can add affiliate listings from programs such as Amazon Associates and eBay Partner Network. Affiliate listings are a no-inventory option that works right now.

How it works

  1. 1

    Connect your supplier account

Go to Products → Integrations → Dropshipping and connect your own CJdropshipping account with its API key. The key is encrypted and only used for your store.

  2. 2

    Search and import products

Search the supplier's catalog, tick the products you want and import them as drafts. Product data keeps the supplier's attribution.

  3. 3

    Set your pricing rules

Choose markup, margin or fixed profit, a minimum profit, rounding and your payment fees. You see the selling price and estimated profit before anything goes live.

  4. 4

    Publish and fulfil

Review and publish your drafts. When a buyer pays, a supplier order with everything you need appears in Orders → Supplier orders; add the tracking number and the buyer is emailed. Nothing is ever ordered without your approval.

How dropshipping works

In a dropshipping business, you are the shop and the supplier is your warehouse. The customer buys from you at your price. You then pay the supplier their price, and they ship the product directly to your customer. You never touch the stock, but the customer sees your brand and expects you to stand behind the order.

  • No inventory to buy before you make a sale
  • No packing, storage or shipping to manage yourself
  • You set the selling price; the supplier sets their cost
  • Your profit is the difference, minus payment and other costs
  • Easy to test new products without buying stock
  • The customer experience is still your responsibility

Dropshipping on MultiVendor today

Partly available

Dropshipping lives in the same product tools you already use. Connect your own supplier account, add their products to your store as drafts and price them with your own rules. When a buyer pays, a supplier order is prepared for you to place, and the tracking you add is emailed to the buyer. Fully automatic forwarding is the part still being built.

  • CJdropshipping: connect your account, search the catalog, import products (available)
  • BigBuy: connect and check your account (catalog import next)
  • AliExpress Dropshipping: waiting for platform approval from AliExpress
  • Pricing rules: markup, margin or fixed profit, minimum profit, rounding, fees
  • Profit estimate before you publish
  • Each marketplace seller uses their own supplier account
  • Paid orders create supplier orders; tracking you add is emailed to the buyer
  • Coming: automatic order forwarding and stock sync

Choosing dropshipping suppliers

Your supplier is the most important decision in a dropshipping business, because their speed and quality become your reputation. Before you list anything, order samples, read the supplier's policies and make sure you can explain their shipping times and returns process to your customers in plain words.

  • Reliable, realistic shipping times to your customers' countries
  • Accurate product descriptions, sizes and photos
  • Consistent quality you have checked with your own samples
  • A clear returns and damaged-item process
  • Tracking on every shipment
  • Responsive communication when something goes wrong
  • Products you are allowed to resell under your own brand

Pricing and markup: thinking it through

A good dropshipping price covers more than the supplier's cost. Add up the product cost, the shipping cost you pay the supplier, your payment provider's processing fee, any advertising you spend to win the sale and an allowance for returns. Then decide what margin makes the work worthwhile. Because MultiVendor takes no commission, the platform never adds a percentage on top.

  • Start from the full cost per order, not just the product price
  • Include payment processing fees from your own Stripe or PayPal account
  • Budget for marketing and for the occasional refund
  • Check what similar products sell for, then add value with your brand
  • Use bundles and options to raise the order value
  • Review your prices when supplier costs change

Customer service is still yours

With dropshipping, the supplier ships, but the customer bought from you. Questions about delivery times, damaged items, wrong sizes and refunds come to you, and you work them out with the supplier behind the scenes. Clear policies and quick replies are what turn a one-time buyer into a returning customer.

  • Show honest processing and delivery times on every product
  • Publish a returns policy that matches your supplier's
  • Reply quickly to buyer inquiries
  • Share tracking as soon as an order ships
  • Keep records of supplier orders and issues

For every type of store

How dropshipping works when you sell merchandise, digital downloads, online courses or online events.

Merchandise

Merchandise is where dropshipping fits: clothing, accessories, home goods and other physical products shipped by a supplier. Today you can sell your own stock with zones, rates and tracking, or add affiliate listings for products you recommend without holding inventory.

Sell merchandise →

Digital downloads

Digital downloads are already a no-inventory business. You create the e-book, template, preset, art pack or audio once, upload it as a private file and sell it again and again without any shipping or supplier.

Sell digital downloads →

Online events

Events are another way to sell without inventory. Host webinars, workshops and seminars online, in person or hybrid, with capacity limits, automatic waitlists and reminder emails. Sell tickets or run free events.

Host online events →

Online courses

Online courses need no stock and no supplier. Build modules and lessons with text, video, audio and PDF, offer free preview lessons, and let learners keep their progress in their library. Sell paid courses or offer them free.

Get the most out of it

Order samples first

Before you sell any supplier product, buy it yourself. You'll see the real quality, the packaging and the delivery time your customers will experience.

Be honest about delivery times

Supplier shipping can take longer than shipping from your own stock. Show realistic ranges on your product pages so buyers are never surprised.

Build a brand, not just a catalog

Many stores can list the same supplier products. Stand out with a clear niche, better descriptions, helpful photos and fast, friendly service.

Start with affiliate listings today

If you want a no-inventory store right now, add affiliate products from programs such as Amazon Associates or eBay Partner Network. You earn a commission from the program, and the merchant handles shipping.

Questions and answers

What is dropshipping?+

Dropshipping is a way to sell online without holding stock. You list a supplier's products at your own price, and when a customer orders, the supplier ships the item directly to them.

Can I start a dropshipping store on MultiVendor today?+

Yes. Connect your own CJdropshipping account, import products, set your prices and sell. When a buyer pays, a supplier order is prepared for you to place, and the tracking you add is emailed to the buyer. Fully automatic forwarding is coming.

Will MultiVendor take a commission on dropshipping sales?+

No. MultiVendor charges one flat monthly subscription and takes no commission on any sale. Your payment provider charges its own processing fees.

Who handles customer service in dropshipping?+

You do. The supplier ships the order, but the customer bought from your store, so questions, problems and returns come to you.

How should I price dropshipping products?+

Start with the full cost per order: the supplier's product and shipping cost, your payment processing fee, marketing and an allowance for returns. Then add the margin you need.

Is affiliate marketing an alternative to dropshipping?+

It can be. With affiliate listings, buyers click through to the merchant, the merchant handles payment and shipping, and the affiliate program pays you a commission under its own terms. It is available today.

Does dropshipping work for marketplaces?+

Yes. On a multi-vendor marketplace each seller connects their own supplier account in their seller centre, and the marketplace owner decides in Settings whether sellers may use dropshipping. The owner never sees a seller's supplier keys.

What should I look for in a supplier?+

Reliable shipping times, accurate product information, consistent quality, tracking on every order and a clear returns process you can explain to your customers.
