Solar panels convert sunlight into direct current electricity. Most modern panels are monocrystalline, with polycrystalline and thin-film options also available. Full-size rigid panels suit rooftop and ground-mounted systems; bifacial panels collect light from both sides; flexible panels suit curved surfaces on vans and boats; foldable portable panels pair with power stations for camping.
Key specifications on the datasheet include rated power in watts, open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, voltage and current at maximum power, temperature coefficients, dimensions and weight. These determine how many panels can be wired in series or parallel with a given charge controller or inverter. Connector type matters for portable panels.
Grid-tied and roof-mounted systems usually require permits, structural checks and installation by qualified professionals, and utilities may require certified equipment. Used panels can be economical for off-grid projects when tested and free of cracks or delamination.
Buying solar panels
- Check open-circuit voltage and current against your charge controller or inverter limits, including cold-weather voltage rise.
- Compare physical dimensions and weight with your roof, rack or vehicle space.
- For portable panels, check the connector type and whether an adapter for your power station is included.
- Inspect used panels for cracked cells, hot spots, delamination and damaged junction boxes, and ask for test readings.
- Check local permit, utility and certification requirements before installing grid-tied panels.
Questions about solar panels
How many solar panels do I need?
It depends on your daily energy use, sunlight hours where you live and your battery or inverter. Work out your daily watt-hours first, then size the array.
Can I mix different solar panels?
Mixing panels with different electrical ratings can reduce output. If you must, wire similar panels together and check your controller's specifications.
Are used solar panels worth buying?
They can suit off-grid and hobby projects. Ask for measured output, inspect for damage and check that connectors are intact.
