EV chargers supply AC power to a vehicle's onboard charger. Home charging usually uses a wall-mounted unit on a dedicated circuit, often called a Level 2 charger in North America, while portable chargers plug into standard or high-power outlets for travel and occasional use. Charging cables, holders and connector adapters complete the category. DC fast chargers are typically commercial installations.
Key specifications are power output in kilowatts, current in amps, single or three-phase supply, connector type, cable length, enclosure rating for outdoor use and smart features such as scheduling, load balancing and solar charging. The vehicle's onboard charger limits how fast it can charge, so a larger charger is not always faster.
Hardwired chargers and new circuits must be installed by qualified electricians, and many places require permits and certified equipment. Adapters must be rated for the current used. Check local rules and your vehicle manufacturer's guidance.
Choosing an EV charger
- Check your vehicle's connector type and maximum onboard charging rate.
- Confirm your home's supply capacity and have an electrician assess the circuit.
- Choose an outdoor-rated enclosure if the charger will be mounted outside.
- Look for safety certifications your local codes require, and avoid unrated adapters.
- Consider smart features like scheduling and load balancing if you charge overnight or have solar.
Questions about ev chargers
Do I need an electrician to install a home EV charger?
For hardwired chargers or new circuits, yes. Many places also require permits and inspection. Check local rules.
Will a more powerful charger charge my car faster?
Only up to the limit of your vehicle's onboard charger and your electrical supply.
Are connector adapters safe?
Use adapters rated for the current and approved for your vehicle. Low-quality adapters can overheat.
