A portable power station combines a rechargeable battery, an inverter, a charge controller and outlets in one box. Sizes range from small units for phones and laptops to large wheeled units that can run fridges, power tools or home circuits. They are often called solar generators when paired with portable panels, though they do not generate power on their own.
Key specs are battery capacity in watt-hours, continuous and surge AC output in watts, battery chemistry, charging inputs and outlet types. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are known for long cycle life, while other lithium chemistries are lighter. Some units are expandable with extra batteries, and some support pass-through charging for use as a basic backup supply.
Use power stations indoors only as the manufacturer intends, keep them ventilated and away from heat, and never connect one to household wiring without a proper transfer method installed by a qualified electrician. Lithium batteries have shipping restrictions.
Choosing a portable power station
- Compare watt-hour capacity with the energy your devices use over the time you need.
- Check continuous and surge output for appliances with motors, like fridges and pumps.
- Look at battery chemistry and rated cycle life if you will use it often.
- Check solar input voltage and connector type so your panels are compatible.
- For used units, ask about cycle count, battery health and whether all cables are included.
Questions about portable power stations
How long will a power station run my fridge?
Divide the station's usable watt-hours by the fridge's average hourly consumption. Real runtime varies with temperature and inverter efficiency.
Can I use a power station for home backup?
You can run appliances directly from its outlets. Connecting it to home circuits requires a suitable transfer device installed by a qualified electrician.
Can I take a power station on a plane?
Most large units exceed airline lithium battery limits. Check your airline's rules.
