About inverters

An inverter converts direct current from batteries or solar panels into alternating current for household appliances. Off-grid inverters run from a battery bank; inverter-chargers also charge batteries from shore or generator power; grid-tied string inverters and microinverters feed solar power into a building and the grid; hybrid inverters combine solar, battery and grid functions. Small vehicle inverters plug into 12-volt sockets or connect directly to a battery.

Key specifications include continuous and surge output, input voltage, output voltage and frequency, waveform, efficiency, transfer time and, for solar inverters, maximum input voltage and MPPT channels. Pure sine wave output is preferred for most electronics and motors. Grid-tied and hybrid inverters often need specific certifications for utility approval.

Inverters handle high currents. Use correctly sized cables and fuses, mount them with ventilation, and have grid-connected or household-wired inverters installed by qualified electricians following local rules.

Choosing an inverter

  • Match the inverter's input voltage to your battery bank, such as 12, 24 or 48 volts.
  • Size continuous output for your typical load and surge output for motor starting.
  • Choose pure sine wave for sensitive electronics, motors and most household use.
  • For grid-tied or hybrid units, check that the certifications meet your utility's requirements.
  • Use cable sizes and fuses recommended by the manufacturer and qualified installation for household wiring.

Questions about inverters

What is the difference between pure and modified sine wave?

Pure sine wave closely matches utility power and suits almost all devices. Modified sine wave is cheaper but can make some devices run hot, noisy or not at all.

What is a hybrid inverter?

A hybrid inverter manages solar input, battery storage and grid connection in one unit, often with backup capability during outages.

Does a grid-tied inverter work during a power cut?

Standard grid-tied inverters shut down during outages for safety. Backup requires a hybrid system or specific equipment.
