About generators

Generators turn fuel into electricity. Inverter generators produce stable power suitable for sensitive electronics and are usually quieter and lighter. Conventional portable generators deliver more power for the price and suit job sites and backup. Dual-fuel and tri-fuel units run on gasoline, propane or natural gas. Standby generators are permanently installed and start automatically during an outage.

Sizing starts with running watts and starting watts. Motors in fridges, pumps and air conditioners need extra surge power to start. Other considerations include runtime per tank, noise level, outlets, electric start, parallel capability and emission rules that apply where you live.

Generators produce carbon monoxide and must never run indoors or in enclosed spaces. Connecting a generator to household wiring requires a transfer switch or interlock installed by a qualified electrician; backfeeding is dangerous for you and utility workers. Check local rules on installation and emissions.

Choosing a generator

  • Add the running watts of everything you will run together, plus the largest starting surge.
  • Choose an inverter generator if you will power laptops, TVs or other sensitive electronics.
  • Check fuel type, runtime per tank and noise level for your use.
  • Plan a transfer switch or interlock installed by a qualified electrician for home connection.
  • For used generators, ask about hours, maintenance and whether fuel was drained for storage.

Questions about generators

What size generator do I need?

Total the running watts of what you need at the same time and add the highest starting watts. Choose a generator rated above that total.

Can I plug a generator into my house?

Only through a properly installed transfer switch or interlock. Never backfeed through an outlet. Have a qualified electrician do the installation.

Where is it safe to run a generator?

Outdoors only, away from windows, doors and vents, because exhaust contains carbon monoxide. Use a carbon monoxide alarm indoors.
