Batteries store energy for later use. In this category the focus is deep cycle and storage batteries, designed to discharge deeply many times, rather than engine-starting batteries. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are popular for solar, RV and marine use thanks to long cycle life and light weight. Lead-acid types include flooded, AGM and gel. Larger systems use rack-mounted or wall-mounted modules at 48 volts.
Key specifications are nominal voltage, capacity in amp-hours and watt-hours, maximum continuous and peak discharge current, charge voltage, cycle life and operating temperature range. Lithium batteries include a battery management system that protects against overcharge, overdischarge and temperature extremes, and some communicate with inverters.
Batteries carry real risks: fire, chemical leaks and high short-circuit currents. Lithium batteries are regulated as dangerous goods for shipping, and many places have rules on installation, disposal and recycling. Home storage systems should be installed by qualified professionals.
Buying batteries for solar and backup
- Compare usable watt-hours, not just amp-hours, since voltage changes the total energy stored.
- Check discharge current limits against your inverter's maximum draw.
- Make sure your charger or charge controller supports the battery chemistry.
- For lithium batteries in cold climates, check low-temperature charging limits and heating options.
- Ask how the battery will ship, and plan recycling of old batteries according to local rules.
Questions about batteries
Can I replace lead-acid with lithium?
Often, but chargers, alternators and controllers may need settings changes or replacements to suit lithium. Check compatibility first.
Can I connect batteries in series or parallel?
Many batteries allow it within limits set by the manufacturer. Use identical batteries and follow the manual.
Why can't my battery be shipped by air?
Lithium batteries are classed as dangerous goods, and many carriers only ship large ones by ground. Ask the seller about delivery.
