About laundry appliances

Laundry appliances include front-load washers, which are often gentler and more water-efficient, and top-load washers, which are easy to load and quick. Dryers come in vented, condenser and heat pump types, and washer-dryer combos save space in small homes. Portable and twin-tub washers suit apartments and RVs, and irons, steamers and drying racks complete the category.

Check drum capacity, dimensions and door clearance, spin speed, noise and the connections required: water supply, drainage, power and, for vented dryers, an exhaust duct. Gas dryers must be installed by a qualified technician. Stacking kits let a dryer sit on top of a compatible washer.

Used and refurbished washers and dryers are common in this category. Ask independent dealers how a machine was tested and whether they deliver and remove your old appliance.

Choosing a washer or dryer

  • Measure the space, door opening and delivery route, including stairs.
  • Check drum capacity for your household and whether the machine can be stacked.
  • Confirm connections: water, drain, power and venting for vented dryers.
  • Gas dryers and some electric connections require qualified installation; follow local rules.
  • For used machines, ask about drum bearings, seals, testing and warranty.
  • Ask whether transit bolts are included and must be removed before use.

Questions about laundry appliances

Which dryer type should I choose?

Vented dryers need an exhaust to the outside, condenser dryers do not, and heat pump dryers are usually more energy-efficient but slower. Ask the seller which suits your space.

Can I stack my washer and dryer?

Only with compatible models and the correct stacking kit. Check the listing and ask the seller.

What should I check on a used washing machine?

Ask about bearing noise, door seal condition, leaks, testing and any warranty, and request a photo of the drum and seal.
