About fonts, icons & typography

This category covers the type and symbol side of design. Independent type designers and small foundries sell complete font families, attention-grabbing display fonts and flowing script fonts; illustrators sell icon packs, symbol collections and hand-lettered graphics; calligraphers sell digitized calligraphy; and bundles combine several typefaces and extras.

Fonts are usually supplied as OTF (OpenType) or TTF (TrueType) for installing on a computer, and as WOFF or WOFF2 for websites. OpenType fonts can include alternates, ligatures, swashes and multiple languages, which you access in apps that support OpenType features. Icon packs typically come as SVG, PNG, icon fonts and files for common design tools.

Font licensing is specific. A desktop license lets you install the font on a set number of computers to make graphics, print and documents. A web license covers embedding the font on websites, often limited by page views or domains. An app license covers embedding in mobile or desktop software, and other licenses cover eBooks, broadcast or logos. Check which uses are included before you buy, and ask the designer if your project falls outside the standard terms.

Buying fonts and icons: formats and licenses

  • Check the license type you need: desktop for graphics and print, web for embedding on sites, app for software, plus any eBook or broadcast use.
  • Note how many computers, domains or apps the license covers.
  • Confirm formats — OTF or TTF for desktop, WOFF or WOFF2 for the web; SVG and PNG for icons.
  • Check language support if you design in languages beyond English.
  • Look for OpenType features like alternates and ligatures, and whether your app supports them.
  • For icons, check the style consistency, grid size and whether strokes are editable.

Questions about fonts, icons & typography

What's the difference between desktop, web and app font licenses?

A desktop license lets you install the font on your computer to create graphics, print and documents. A web license lets you embed it on websites. An app license lets you embed it inside software. Each covers different uses, and you may need more than one.

Can I use a font in a logo?

Many desktop licenses allow logo use, but some restrict it or require an extended license. Check the terms on the listing or ask the designer.

OTF or TTF — which should I install?

Both work in most apps. OTF often supports more advanced typographic features. Install one format, not both, to avoid conflicts.

How do I get my font after buying?

It's a digital download available right after checkout, usually as a ZIP with font files and a license document.
