Craft & Production Patterns

Craft and production patterns are the instructions and files makers use to create physical things. A sewing pattern tells you how to cut and assemble a garment; a knitting or crochet pattern guides every row; an embroidery file tells a machine where to stitch; a cutting file tells a cutter where to slice vinyl, paper or fabric.

Patterns come as print-at-home PDFs, large-format copy-shop and projector files, machine-readable embroidery formats, and vector files such as SVG and DXF. Written patterns often include charts, schematics, photo tutorials and size or gauge information.

To choose well, check the formats against your printer or machine, the size range and measurements, the skill level and materials needed, and the license. Personal-use licenses cover what you make for yourself and as gifts; selling finished items usually needs a commercial or small-batch license from the designer.
