About cutting templates

Cutting templates are the shapes you trace or cut around to make a project. Leatherworkers use them for wallets, bags and belts; quilters use block and appliqué templates; paper crafters use box, envelope and flower templates; cosplayers use foam armor templates.

Templates come as print-at-home PDFs with a scale square, large-format files for copy shops, and vector versions for laser or digital cutters. Leather patterns often include stitch-hole markings and assembly steps; quilting templates may include seam allowances and grain lines.

Check that the template prints at true size, that the thickness of your material matches what the design assumes, and whether instructions are included. Commercial licenses matter if you'll sell finished goods.

Choosing cutting templates

  • Print the scale square first to confirm true size.
  • Check the material thickness the template was designed for.
  • See whether stitch holes, seam allowances or fold lines are marked.
  • Look for vector versions if you use a laser or digital cutter.
  • Read the license for selling finished items.

Questions about cutting templates

My template printed the wrong size. What happened?

Most likely your printer scaled the page. Print at actual size or no scaling and re-measure the scale square.

Can I use leather templates with other materials?

Often, but thickness changes how folds and stitching line up. Test with scrap material first.

Can I cut templates on a laser cutter?

If vector files are included, yes. Some sellers offer an acrylic template edition for repeated use.
