A font family is a typeface designed in multiple related styles: weights from thin to black, matching italics, sometimes widths and optical sizes. Families are the workhorses of design — used for body text, interfaces, branding systems, editorial layouts and signage. Independent foundries sell sans serif, serif, slab serif, monospaced and humanist families, as well as variable fonts that pack every weight into one file.
Good families include consistent spacing and kerning, OpenType features such as small caps, tabular and old-style numerals, and support for extended Latin and other scripts. Specimens should show the family in real text at small and large sizes.
Licensing often lets you buy individual styles or the full family, for desktop, web and app use. Check how many styles you need, the languages covered and whether a variable version is included.
Choosing a font family
- List the weights and italics you need; buying the full family is often simpler.
- Check language and character set support for your audience.
- Look for OpenType features — small caps, numeral styles, ligatures.
- Consider a variable font for websites and flexible design systems.
- Choose desktop, web or app licenses for every place you'll use the font.
