Physical publications covers printed work that doesn't fit neatly into books or magazines: photocopied and risograph zines, poetry chapbooks, hand-bound artist books, pamphlets, community newsletters, broadsides and exhibition booklets.
These are usually made in small runs by individual creators, collectives and micro-presses, which is a large part of their appeal. Print method, paper, binding and edition size are part of the work, and some pieces are numbered or signed.
Readers and collectors buy them to support independent voices, to collect a particular artist or press, or to find writing and art on niche subjects that mainstream publishers rarely cover.
Buying zines and small-press publications
- Check the format, page count and dimensions — zines range from palm-sized to tabloid.
- Look for print method and paper details such as risograph, letterpress or photocopy, which affect look and feel.
- For limited editions, ask about the edition size and whether your copy is numbered or signed.
- Hand-bound artist books can be delicate; ask how they will be packed.
- Message the creator directly if you want back issues or a whole series.
Questions about physical publications
What's the difference between a zine and a chapbook?
A zine is a self-published, often handmade magazine on any subject. A chapbook is a short, usually stapled or sewn booklet, most often of poetry or short fiction.
Are small-press publications reprinted?
Some are, many aren't. Limited or numbered editions may never be reprinted, so ask the creator if you are hoping for a later run.
Can I buy directly from the creator?
Often, yes. Many creators and micro-presses run their own shops on MultiVendor Market, and you can message them from any listing.
