About nonfiction books

Nonfiction covers any book about real events, people, ideas or skills. On MultiVendor Market that includes narrative history, memoirs and biographies, popular science, philosophy and religion, business and economics, true crime, nature writing, cookbooks, and large-format art and photography books.

Independent sellers are especially strong for out-of-print and specialist nonfiction: regional and local history, military history, older cookbooks, academic monographs and exhibition catalogs that rarely appear in general bookstores.

For many nonfiction books the publication date matters. A newer edition may include updated research, while older editions are sometimes sought after for their original text, illustrations or historical perspective. The listing should make clear which one you are buying.

What to check before buying nonfiction books

  • Check the edition and publication year, especially for science, travel, law or technology topics where information dates quickly.
  • Art and photography books are prized for print quality — ask about the condition of plates, spine and slipcase.
  • Used cookbooks may have kitchen stains or handwritten notes; some buyers love these, but the listing should mention them.
  • Look for notes about highlighting and underlining in history and philosophy books that were used for study.
  • Large-format books are heavy, so check shipping cost and how the seller will pack them.

Questions about nonfiction books

Where can I find out-of-print nonfiction books?

Independent used-book sellers often stock titles that are no longer in print. Search by title or author, and message sellers who specialize in that subject — they may have copies that aren't listed yet.

Is an older edition of a nonfiction book still worth buying?

It depends on the subject. Narrative history, memoir and essays age well, while technical, medical, legal and travel information can go out of date. Check the year and compare editions.

Do used cookbooks come with writing in them?

Sometimes. Previous owners often annotate recipes. A good listing will say so; if it doesn't, ask the seller before you buy.
