About children's books

Children's books are organized less by genre than by reading stage. Board books with thick card pages suit babies and toddlers; picture books are read aloud to preschool and early-school children; early readers and chapter books support children learning to read on their own; middle-grade and young-adult novels serve older readers.

On MultiVendor Market you will find new titles from independent children's bookshops, gently used books from families and resellers, bilingual books, books by independent illustrators and authors, and vintage children's books collected for their illustrations.

Because young children handle books roughly, condition and construction matter. Lift-the-flap, pop-up and touch-and-feel books should be described with any missing or torn parts, and activity books with any pages already written in.

Choosing children's books

  • Check the suggested age or reading level and the format — board book, hardcover picture book or paperback — for the child you are buying for.
  • For novelty books, confirm every flap, tab and pop-up is intact and that nothing small has come loose.
  • Activity, sticker and workbook titles should be unused unless the listing says otherwise.
  • Bilingual books vary in layout; ask whether both languages appear on every page.
  • For very young children, look for sturdy construction and ask the seller about any loose or small parts.

Questions about children's books

What's the difference between picture books, early readers and chapter books?

Picture books are mainly read aloud to young children with illustrations on every page. Early readers use simple, controlled vocabulary for children starting to read alone. Chapter books are longer, with short chapters and fewer pictures.

Are used children's books a good idea?

They are often a good-value way to build a home library. Read the condition notes carefully and look for mentions of writing, torn pages or missing pieces on novelty books.

Can I find vintage children's books with original illustrations?

Yes, collectors and used-book dealers often list older editions. Ask for photos of the illustrations, binding and copyright page to confirm the edition.
