About comics

Comics come in several formats. Single issues are the classic stapled monthly comics that collectors file in bags and boards. Trade paperbacks and hardcover collections gather a story arc into one book. Graphic novels are complete long-form stories, and manga volumes collect Japanese and Japanese-style series, usually read right to left.

Collectors care about details that ordinary readers might miss: the issue number, cover variant, printing, and whether a book has been professionally graded and sealed. Readers, on the other hand, often look for complete runs or collected editions of a series.

Independent sellers on MultiVendor Market include comic shops, collectors selling runs, and indie creators selling self-published comics and zines directly to readers.

Buying comics and graphic novels

  • Check the issue number, cover variant and printing — reprints and variants can look similar but differ in value.
  • For ungraded comics, look for photos of the spine, corners and back cover, where wear is easiest to spot.
  • Graded comics should show the grading label clearly in photos; ask the seller about the case condition.
  • If you are completing a run, ask for a list of issue numbers in any bundle.
  • Make sure the seller ships single issues flat in a bag and board with stiff backing.

Questions about comics

Should I buy single issues or collected editions?

Collected editions are usually the easier way to read a whole story. Single issues appeal to collectors and include original covers, letters pages and ads.

What does a graded comic mean?

A graded comic has been assessed by a grading service, given a condition grade and sealed in a protective case. Ask the seller for clear photos of the label and case.

Which way do I read manga?

Most translated manga keeps the original right-to-left reading order, so you start from what looks like the back cover. Listings usually note if a volume has been flipped.
