A masterclass is a session led by someone with deep, recognized experience in their craft, aimed at people who already know the fundamentals and want to see how an expert thinks. Instead of covering basics, the expert focuses on nuance: how they approach a problem, the decisions they make that less experienced people miss, and critique of real work. Some masterclasses are demonstrations; others feature a few participants' work being reviewed in front of the group.
On MultiVendor Market, masterclasses are hosted by independent experts — senior professionals, established artists, experienced founders and specialist practitioners. They can run online, with the joining link sent to registered attendees, or in person at a venue named on the listing. Seats are often limited so the expert can take questions.
When choosing a masterclass, look closely at the host's body of work and what level the session assumes. If a masterclass is too advanced or too basic for you, you'll get less from it, so read the prerequisites and message the host if you're unsure.
Choosing a masterclass
- Look at the expert's actual work and experience, not just their title.
- Check the assumed level; masterclasses usually expect you to know the fundamentals already.
- Read the format — demonstration, critique of participants' work, or talk with extended Q&A.
- If participant work is reviewed, see whether you need to submit something beforehand.
- Check the time zone and length, and whether a replay is shared with registered attendees.
- For in-person sessions, confirm the venue and arrival time.
Questions about masterclasses
How is a masterclass different from a workshop?
A workshop is mainly about you practicing a skill. A masterclass centers on an expert sharing advanced technique and judgment, often through demonstration or critique, for people already past the basics.
Can beginners attend a masterclass?
Some masterclasses welcome motivated beginners, but most assume prior experience. Check the listing's level and prerequisites.
How do I join an online masterclass?
Once you register, the host's meeting link is sent to you, followed by reminder emails before the session.
