About innovation challenges

An innovation challenge sets a real problem and invites people to propose solutions. Unlike a hackathon, the emphasis is often on the idea, the research and the pitch rather than code. Formats include open idea competitions, student challenges set by local organizations, social impact challenges, sustainability challenges, design sprints and pitch nights where early-stage founders present to judges.

Most run in stages: a problem brief and kickoff, a period of research and development, often with mentoring sessions, a submission or shortlist, and a final pitch event. Many are team based, and some include workshops on problem framing, prototyping and presenting.

On MultiVendor Market each challenge is listed by an independent organizer with the schedule, time zone and either a venue or an online link sent only to registered participants. Pitch events can be online through the organizer's own meeting tool or in person.

Read the rules on eligibility, confidentiality and who owns ideas before you share anything. If prizes or support are offered, contest rules vary by location, so check local rules.

Choosing an innovation challenge

  • Read the problem brief closely and pick a challenge where you have real insight or experience.
  • Check what the challenge says about intellectual property and confidentiality.
  • Look at the stages and time commitment, from kickoff to final pitch.
  • Find out what support is included, such as mentoring or workshops.
  • Confirm eligibility — students, residents of an area, teams or individuals.
  • Practice your pitch to the stated time limit before the final event.

Questions about innovation challenges

How is an innovation challenge different from a hackathon?

Hackathons focus on building a prototype in a short window. Innovation challenges usually run longer and weigh research, the idea and the pitch more heavily.

Is it safe to share my idea?

Read the organizer's rules on confidentiality and ownership before you submit. If your idea is sensitive, ask the organizer how entries are handled.

How do I attend the final pitch online?

Register, and the organizer emails the link to their meeting tool. Only registered participants receive it.
