A hackathon is a time-boxed building event. Participants form teams, pick or receive a challenge and spend a day, a weekend or longer building a working prototype — an app, a tool, a hardware build, a data analysis or a game. It usually ends with demos to judges and the other teams.
A typical schedule runs from kickoff and theme reveal, through team formation, hours of building with mentor check-ins, to a submission deadline and short project demos. Themed hackathons focus on areas like climate, civic tech, accessibility, health, education or open data; beginner hackathons add workshops and extra mentoring for first-timers.
Organizers on MultiVendor Market list their hackathons with the schedule, the time zone and either a venue or an online link sent only to registered participants. Online hackathons rely on the organizer's chosen chat, meeting and code-sharing tools.
Before you commit, check the rules on team size, whether code must be written during the event, which tools and libraries are allowed and who owns the project afterward. If prizes are offered, contest rules vary by location, so check local rules.
Getting the most from a hackathon
- Pick a theme you care about; motivation matters when the deadline gets close.
- First time? Look for beginner-friendly hackathons with workshops, mentors and team matching.
- Read the intellectual property rules so you know who owns what your team builds.
- Set up your laptop, accounts and dev environment before kickoff, not during it.
- Check every schedule time in your own time zone, especially the submission deadline.
- Plan rest and food; a working demo beats an exhausted team.
Questions about hackathons
Do I need to know how to code to join a hackathon?
Not always. Teams need designers, researchers, writers and presenters too. Beginner hackathons are the most welcoming place to start.
Can I join without a team?
Usually yes. Many organizers run team formation at kickoff. Check the listing or message the host to confirm.
How does an online hackathon work?
After you register, the organizer sends links to their meeting and chat tools. Teams build remotely, then submit and demo by the published deadline.
Who owns the project we build?
That is set in each hackathon's rules. Read them before you start, especially for sponsored events.
