Guitars come in several families. Acoustic steel-string guitars range from small parlor bodies to large dreadnoughts and jumbos; classical and flamenco guitars use nylon strings and wider necks; electric guitars include solid-body, semi-hollow and hollow-body designs; and bass guitars come in four-, five- and six-string versions in different scale lengths.
Tone and feel depend on construction: solid versus laminate tops on acoustics, tonewoods, pickups and electronics on electrics, neck profile, scale length and fretboard radius. A guitar's setup — action, intonation and relief — affects playability as much as the model.
Independent sellers offer everything from beginner instruments to vintage and boutique guitars, as well as handmade instruments built by luthiers.
What to check before buying a guitar
- Ask about fret wear, neck straightness, action height and whether the truss rod adjusts properly.
- For acoustics, check for top cracks, bridge lifting and whether the top is solid or laminate.
- For electrics, ask whether all pickups, switches and pots work without crackle.
- Check for modifications, refinishes or replaced parts, which affect vintage value.
- Confirm whether a case or gig bag is included and how the guitar will be packed.
Questions about guitars
What size guitar should a beginner buy?
It depends on the player's size and style. Smaller bodies and shorter scales suit children and smaller adults, and nylon-string guitars are gentler on fingertips.
What is a guitar setup?
A setup adjusts the neck relief, string height, intonation and sometimes the nut, so the guitar plays comfortably and in tune. Ask if the seller has set up the guitar.
How can I tell if a vintage guitar is original?
Ask for photos of the serial number, headstock, neck heel, electronics cavity and hardware. Replaced parts and refinishes are common and should be disclosed.
