About amplifiers

Instrument amplifiers make an electric guitar, bass or keyboard audible and shape its tone. They come as combos, with amp and speaker in one box, or as separate heads and speaker cabinets. Tube amps are prized for their response and overdrive, solid-state amps are lighter and lower maintenance, and modeling amps emulate many amp sounds digitally.

Power rating, speaker size and number, and features such as effects loops, channels, reverb and headphone or direct outputs all affect how an amp suits home practice, recording or gigging.

Tube amps contain high voltages even when unplugged, so any internal service should be done by a qualified technician.

What to check before buying an amplifier

  • Ask whether every channel, knob and switch works without crackle, hum or cutting out.
  • For tube amps, ask when the tubes were replaced and whether it has had a service.
  • Match impedance between heads and cabinets; ask the seller if you're unsure.
  • Check voltage and plug type — many amps are built for one region's mains power.
  • Amps are heavy and fragile; confirm packing, shipping cost or local pickup.

Questions about amplifiers

Should I buy a tube amp or a modeling amp?

Tube amps offer a classic feel and need occasional tube changes. Modeling amps are versatile, lighter and often better for quiet home use and recording.

Can I use an amp from another country?

Only if the voltage matches or the amp has a voltage selector. Using the wrong voltage can damage it. Ask the seller.

Is it safe to open a tube amp myself?

No. Tube amps can hold dangerous voltages even when unplugged. Have a qualified technician do any internal work.
