About wallets

Wallets have narrowed and diversified at the same time. Classic bifolds and trifolds hold cash and several cards; slim card holders carry a few cards and a folded bill; long wallets and zip-around styles fit a checkbook, phone or receipts; travel wallets hold a passport, boarding passes and foreign currency. Front-pocket minimalist wallets are popular for people who carry little, while clutch-style wallets with zipped coin sections suit those who still use cash and coins.

Leather and stitching define a wallet's lifespan. Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather is firm, takes engraving and embossing well and darkens with handling; chrome-tanned leather is softer and comes in more colors. Hand saddle-stitching, done with two needles, holds even if one stitch breaks, while machine lockstitch is neat and consistent. Look at edge finishing: burnished or painted edges resist fraying, and raw edges can roughen over time. Some wallets include a lining that blocks RFID signals; if that matters to you, check what the maker states.

Personalized wallets with initials, names or dates are popular gifts. Ask how the personalization is done, such as hot foil, blind embossing or laser engraving, and how long it adds to production.

Choosing a wallet

  • Count the cards and cash you actually carry, then pick a style with that many slots rather than the most you could fit.
  • Check the dimensions folded and unfolded, especially if you carry it in a front pocket.
  • Ask whether the wallet is hand saddle-stitched or machine stitched, and how the edges are finished.
  • Expect new leather card slots to be snug; they relax as the leather breaks in.
  • For personalization, confirm the method, character limit, placement and any extra production time.
  • If you want RFID blocking, check the listing states it rather than assuming.

Questions about wallets

Why are the card slots so tight on my new leather wallet?

Leather wallets are often made with snug slots so they hold cards securely once the leather stretches. Most slots loosen within a few weeks of regular use. Avoid forcing extra cards into one slot, which can stretch it too far.

What is the difference between vegetable-tanned and chrome-tanned leather?

Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned with plant-based tannins, starts firmer and develops a deep patina with handling. Chrome-tanned leather is softer, more uniform and often more resistant to water and stains. Both can make a durable wallet; it comes down to feel and how you want it to age.

Can I get a wallet personalized?

Many leatherworkers offer initials or names by embossing, hot foil stamping or engraving. Check the listing for available fonts, placement and character limits, and message the seller if you have a special request.

How do I care for a leather wallet?

Keep it away from prolonged moisture and heat, wipe it with a dry cloth, and apply a small amount of leather conditioner occasionally if it looks dry. Avoid overstuffing, which strains seams and changes the shape.
