About backpacks

Backpacks are sized by volume, usually in liters, and by the shape of their opening. Everyday packs and commuter bags often have a padded laptop sleeve and organizer pockets; travel packs open like a suitcase with a clamshell zipper so you can pack flat; rolltops close by folding the top over, which sheds rain and lets the bag expand; rucksacks with drawstrings and flaps have a classic look. Hiking daypacks add hip belts, sternum straps, hydration sleeves and ventilated back panels.

Materials and build set how long a pack lasts. Waxed canvas and leather age well and suit city use; nylon and polyester fabrics are lighter and come in different weights, with coated or laminated versions shedding water better. Look at zipper size and quality, reinforced stitching at strap anchors, the padding and shape of shoulder straps, and whether the base is reinforced. Water-resistant is not the same as waterproof, so check what the maker claims and how the seams are treated.

Fit matters for anything you carry often. Torso length, strap width and the distance between straps affect comfort, and a pack that is too large tends to sag. If you fly often, compare the pack's dimensions with your airline's carry-on limits rather than relying on a general label. For laptops, check the sleeve dimensions against your device rather than its screen size.

Choosing a backpack

  • Pick a volume for the use: smaller packs for daily carry, larger ones for travel or full-day hikes.
  • Check laptop sleeve dimensions against your device itself, not just its advertised screen size.
  • For flights, compare the pack's external dimensions with your airline's carry-on rules.
  • Look at strap padding, a sternum strap or hip belt for heavier loads, and the back panel's ventilation.
  • Check whether the fabric is described as water-resistant or waterproof, and whether seams or zippers are sealed.
  • Inspect reinforced stitching at strap anchors and the base; these are common failure points.

Questions about backpacks

What size backpack do I need?

It depends on what you carry. Small packs suit a laptop, lunch and a few essentials; mid-size packs handle a gym change or a day hike; larger packs work for weekend travel. Look at the volume and the seller's photos showing what fits inside.

Is a water-resistant backpack enough for rain?

Water-resistant fabrics and coatings keep out light rain for a while, but water can still get in through zippers and seams. If you commute by bike or walk in heavy rain, look for a rolltop or a pack described as waterproof, or use a rain cover.

How should a backpack fit?

The pack should sit close to your back with the top of the shoulder straps just below the top of your shoulders. For heavier loads, a hip belt should rest on your hip bones and carry much of the weight. Adjust straps so the bag does not hang low or swing.

How do I clean a backpack?

Empty it, brush out debris and spot clean with mild soap and a soft brush. Many fabric packs can be hand washed in lukewarm water, but avoid washing machines unless the maker says it is safe. Clean waxed canvas and leather only with products made for them.
