Hats cover practical and formal needs. Felt fedoras and wide-brim hats are made from wool or fur felt and blocked into shape; flat caps and newsboy caps are cut and sewn from tweed, wool or cotton; baseball caps come structured or unstructured, with fitted, snapback or strap closures; knit beanies keep heads warm in winter; straw hats, panamas and bucket hats provide shade in summer. Milliners also make occasion hats and fascinators for weddings and races.
Fit is measured by head circumference, taken around the forehead just above the ears. Fitted hats use sizes such as small, medium and large or traditional hat sizes like 7 1/4, and makers differ in how they map between them. Sweatbands, sizing tape and adjustable closures fine-tune fit. Brim width, crown height and crown shape (such as a teardrop or pinch) change the look, and a wider brim gives more shade.
Materials determine care. Wool felt sheds light rain but should dry on its crown or a hat stand, not on the brim. Straw can crack if it dries out or is crushed, and many straw hats should not be folded. Cotton caps can often be spot cleaned, while knitwear varies by yarn. If you are buying a hat mainly for sun protection, look at brim width and fabric weave, and check whether any sun protection rating stated meets local labeling rules.
Choosing a hat
- Measure your head circumference just above the ears and across the forehead, then compare with the seller's size chart.
- Check whether the hat is fitted, adjustable or has sizing tape, especially if you are between sizes.
- Look at brim width and crown height in the listing; small differences change both the look and the shade.
- Read the material and care notes; wool felt, straw, cotton and knit all need different handling.
- For handmade millinery, ask about lead times and whether the maker can adjust size or trim.
- Consider how the hat will be shipped; structured hats should arrive in a box that protects the brim.
Questions about hats
How do I measure my hat size?
Wrap a soft tape measure around your head where the hat will sit, usually across the middle of the forehead and just above the ears. Keep it snug but comfortable. Compare the measurement with the seller's chart, since hat sizing differs between makers.
What if a hat is a little too big?
Small amounts of extra room can often be taken up with sizing tape or foam strips placed behind the sweatband. A hat that is too small is harder to fix, so if you are between sizes, many people choose the larger one.
How do I care for a felt hat?
Handle it by the brim rather than pinching the crown, brush it in the direction of the nap, and rest it upside down on its crown or on a hat stand. If it gets wet, let it dry naturally at room temperature.
Can straw hats be folded or packed?
Most straw hats should not be folded, because the fibers can crack. Some are woven to be packable, and the listing should say so. Otherwise, pack them in a box or wear them while traveling.
