Technology demos focus on seeing technology work in front of you. An engineer might demonstrate a robotics kit, a maker a custom keyboard or smart-home device, a startup a prototype sensor, or a researcher a new technique. Unlike pure software demos, technology demos often involve physical hardware, so in-person sessions and demo nights are popular, though many run online with cameras on the device.
Demo days and maker nights bring several presenters together, each showing their project for a few minutes before questions. Single-presenter demos go deeper into how the technology was built and what it can do.
When attending, ask about technical specifications, compatibility, power requirements and the stage of development — a prototype may change before it's sold. For products with batteries or electrical components, ask about safety standards and shipping.
Getting the most from a technology demo
- Ask whether you're seeing a finished product or a prototype.
- Check technical specs, compatibility and power requirements.
- For hardware with batteries or mains power, ask about safety standards and shipping rules.
- Look at the seller's product listing for model details and what's in the box.
- Confirm the venue for in-person demo nights or the time zone for online ones.
Questions about technology demos
Can I try the technology myself?
At in-person demos, sometimes. The listing or host will say whether hands-on time is available.
Is the product available to buy?
If it's listed in the host's shop, yes. Prototypes may not be for sale yet; message the seller to ask.
How do online technology demos work?
The host shows the device on camera through their own meeting or streaming tool. The link is sent after you register.
