About surfing equipment

Surfboards are chosen by shape, length and volume. Longboards are long, stable and paddle easily, making them good for small waves and learning. Soft-top foam boards are forgiving for beginners. Funboards and mid-lengths bridge the gap, fish boards are wide and fast in small, mushy waves, and shortboards are narrow and maneuverable for experienced surfers in better waves. Step-ups and guns are built for bigger surf.

Construction includes polyurethane boards glassed with polyester resin, lighter epoxy boards and soft-tops. Fin setups include single fin, twin, thruster and quad, using different fin box systems. Many surfers buy from local shapers who make custom boards to their weight, ability and waves.

The rest of the kit includes wetsuits sized by thickness for water temperature, leashes by board length, wax for the water temperature, traction pads, board bags and roof racks. Surf within your ability, learn local etiquette and hazards, and use a leash suited to your board.

Choosing a surfboard

  • Choose board length and volume for your weight, fitness and ability.
  • Pick a shape suited to your local waves, not the board you hope to ride later.
  • Check fin setup and fin box system so you can use or buy compatible fins.
  • For used boards, check dings, pressure dents, delamination, repairs and any water damage.
  • Choose wetsuit thickness for your water temperature and a leash matched to board length.

Questions about surfing equipment

What surfboard should a beginner get?

A soft-top or longboard with plenty of volume is easiest to paddle and catch waves on. Ask the seller to recommend a size based on your weight and ability.

Are used surfboards a good buy?

Often, yes. Check for unrepaired dings, soft spots, delamination and yellowing, and ask how well repairs were done. Small cosmetic dings are normal.

How do I choose a wetsuit for surfing?

Wetsuit thickness is chosen by water temperature. It should be snug with no gaps at the neck or wrists while still letting you paddle freely. Check the seller's size chart.
