Inflatable docks are made from drop-stitch fabric — thousands of internal threads connecting the top and bottom layers — inflated to high pressure so the surface becomes firm enough to walk, sit and load gear on. They're used as seasonal docks at lake houses and cabins, launch points for kayaks and paddleboards, swim and sunbathing decks, and mooring points for small boats and personal watercraft.
Styles include flat rectangular docks, modular docks that clip together into larger layouts, and drive-on docks with a ramp profile that lets a personal watercraft ride up out of the water to reduce hull fouling. Because they deflate and roll up, they're easier to store over winter than fixed docks and can move between locations.
Look at length, width, thickness, rated load and inflation pressure, and at anchoring points, D-rings, handles and non-slip deck pads. Plan anchoring for your water depth, wind and wave exposure, and check local rules or permits for placing docks and moorings on your waterway.
Choosing an inflatable dock
- Compare dimensions, thickness and rated load against how many people and what craft will use it.
- Plan anchors, lines and attachment points for your water depth, current and wind exposure.
- Check for D-rings, handles, non-slip traction and a quality valve, plus what pump is included.
- For drive-on personal watercraft docks, check hull compatibility and weight capacity.
- For used docks, ask for pressure-hold photos after a day inflated and details of any repairs.
- Check local rules or permits before placing a dock on a lake, river or shoreline.
Questions about inflatable docks
Are inflatable docks stable enough to stand on?
When inflated to the recommended pressure, drop-stitch docks are firm and stable for walking, sitting and launching. Thicker docks feel more solid. Stability also depends on how well the dock is anchored.
How do I anchor an inflatable dock?
Most use anchors or weights on lines attached to D-rings, sometimes tied to a fixed dock or shore point. Choose anchors suited to your bottom type, depth and wind, and ask the seller what they recommend.
How do I store an inflatable dock over winter?
Clean and dry it fully, deflate it, roll it loosely and store it somewhere dry and away from rodents and sharp objects.
