About snorkeling equipment

Snorkeling gear is simple, but fit makes all the difference. The mask is the most important piece: low-volume masks are easier to clear, wide single-lens masks give a broad view, and many masks accept prescription lenses. A good mask seals against your face with soft silicone skirting and doesn't let water in when you look around.

Snorkels come as classic open snorkels, semi-dry designs with a splash guard, and dry snorkels with a valve that closes when submerged; a purge valve makes clearing water easier. Fins come as full-foot fins worn barefoot for warm water and open-heel fins worn with neoprene boots. Snorkel sets bundle mask, snorkel and fins, often with a mesh bag, and there are sized sets for children.

Extras include snorkel vests for buoyancy, rash guards and thin wetsuits for sun and warmth, defog solution and mask straps. Snorkel with a buddy, in conditions within your ability, and wear a buoyancy aid if you're not a confident swimmer. Some full-face masks have raised safety concerns, so research any design carefully.

Choosing snorkeling gear

  • Check mask fit: hold it to your face without the strap and breathe in gently — it should stay put.
  • Choose full-foot fins for warm water and open-heel fins with boots for rocky shores or cooler water.
  • Consider a semi-dry or dry snorkel if you're new and worried about splashes.
  • Ask whether a mask accepts prescription lenses if you wear glasses.
  • Use a snorkel vest or buoyancy aid for extra support, and always snorkel with a buddy.
  • For kids, choose sets sized for children rather than adult gear.

Questions about snorkeling equipment

How do I know if a snorkel mask will fit?

Place the mask on your face without the strap and inhale gently through your nose. If it seals and stays on, it fits. Ask the seller about skirt size if you have a narrow or wide face.

Are full-face snorkel masks safe?

Some full-face designs have raised concerns about breathing and carbon dioxide buildup. Research the specific design, follow the instructions and consider a traditional mask and snorkel.

What size fins do I need?

Full-foot fins are sized by shoe size and should be snug without pinching. Open-heel fins are sized to fit over boots. Check the seller's size guide.
