Sculpture covers three-dimensional artwork of every scale. Tabletop and pedestal pieces suit shelves and plinths, wall sculptures hang like paintings, and outdoor sculptures are made from weather-resistant materials for gardens and courtyards.
Materials shape both look and care. Cast bronze and other metals are durable and often editioned; carved wood and stone are usually unique; welded steel can be left to weather or finished; glass, clay and resin are more fragile. Some sculptors work in limited editions, where each cast is numbered.
Because sculpture is heavy and fragile, how a piece is mounted, installed and shipped is part of the purchase. Buying directly lets you discuss these details with the artist.
Choosing a sculpture
- Check dimensions and weight, and make sure your shelf, plinth or wall can support it.
- Ask whether the piece is unique or part of an edition, and the edition number if so.
- For outdoor sculpture, confirm the material and finish are suitable for your climate.
- Ask how wall sculptures mount and whether hardware is included.
- Large pieces may need freight shipping or local pickup; confirm costs and delivery arrangements first.
Questions about sculptures
What does an edition number on a sculpture mean?
Cast sculptures are often made in a limited edition. A mark such as 3/12 means it is the third cast of twelve. Ask the artist how many casts exist.
Can sculpture be displayed outdoors?
Some can. Bronze, stainless steel, weathering steel and certain stones are made for outdoor use; wood, resin and many clays are not. Ask the sculptor.
How are large sculptures delivered?
Small works ship in padded boxes; larger works may need crates, freight or local pickup. Arrange the details with the seller before ordering.
