Handmade ceramics are made on the wheel or by hand-building — pinching, coiling and slab work — then fired in a kiln and usually glazed. On MultiVendor Market you will find functional tableware such as mugs, bowls and plates, serving dishes, vases and planters, and decorative or sculptural pieces.
The clay body matters. Stoneware is dense and durable for everyday use; porcelain is fine, smooth and often translucent; earthenware is fired at lower temperatures and is more porous. Glazes vary widely, and reduction, wood and soda firings create effects that make each piece unique.
Every handmade pot differs slightly in size, glaze flow and color — that is part of its character. If you are buying a matching set, ask the potter how closely pieces will match.
Buying handmade ceramics
- Check whether a piece is food safe, and dishwasher, microwave and oven safe — potters should state this.
- Look at capacity and dimensions for mugs and bowls, not just the photo.
- Expect variation in glaze and size between handmade pieces, especially in sets.
- Planters may or may not have a drainage hole; check before you buy for live plants.
- Ask how pieces are packed — double boxing protects ceramics far better than a padded envelope.
Questions about ceramics
Is handmade pottery safe to eat and drink from?
Pieces intended for food should be made with food-safe glazes and fired properly. Look for a clear food-safe statement in the listing, and ask the potter if it's missing.
Can handmade ceramics go in the dishwasher?
Many stoneware and porcelain pieces can, but some glazes and lusters cannot. Follow the care instructions from the potter.
Will my set of handmade bowls match exactly?
They will be close but not identical. Size and glaze vary slightly with each piece. Message the potter if you need a tighter match.
