PowerPoint courses teach you to build slides that are clear, consistent and quick to update. Beginner lessons cover the interface, layouts, text and bullet formatting, inserting images, icons, tables and charts, and running a slideshow. The step that makes the biggest difference is learning the Slide Master, where you set fonts, colors, logos and layouts once so every slide follows them.
Design-focused courses go further into visual communication: alignment and spacing, grids and guides, color and type choices, simplifying dense text into one idea per slide, and using SmartArt, shapes and diagrams to explain processes. Data lessons show how to build or paste charts from a spreadsheet, keep them linked, and highlight the one number that matters.
Advanced courses cover animation and transitions used with restraint, Morph and zoom-style navigation, embedding video and audio, interactive menus with hyperlinks, building reusable branded templates for a team, and exporting to PDF or video. Presenting skills, such as using speaker notes, presenter view and rehearsal tools, and structuring a talk around a clear message, often round out the course.
Courses are independent and not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft. Some features differ between PowerPoint versions, Mac and the web edition, and many design principles apply equally to Google Slides or Keynote, so check what a course covers.
Choosing a PowerPoint or presentation course
- Decide whether you need software skills, design skills or presenting skills; many courses lean heavily toward one of the three.
- If your company has a branded template, look for a course that teaches the Slide Master and layouts so you can use and fix templates properly.
- Check that newer features shown, such as Morph or Designer suggestions, are available in your version and platform.
- Look at the trainer's sample slides in the free preview lesson; their own design should reflect what they teach.
- For reports and pitches, pick a course with lessons on charts, data storytelling and cutting text down.
- If you use Google Slides or Keynote, choose a course that says its design lessons apply beyond PowerPoint, or one built for your tool.
Questions about powerpoint
Will a PowerPoint course help with Google Slides?
The design principles carry over well: layout, hierarchy, color, type and simplifying content. The menus and some features differ, so look for a course that covers Slides directly if that is your main tool.
What is the Slide Master and why does it matter?
The Slide Master controls the fonts, colors, logos and layouts used across a whole presentation. Editing it once updates every slide, which keeps decks consistent and makes changes far faster than formatting slides one at a time.
Do these courses teach public speaking too?
Some do. Many PowerPoint courses include a module on presenter view, speaker notes and structuring a talk, while others focus only on building slides. Check the module list or message the trainer.
Can I get templates with the course?
Many trainers include practice files or sell slide templates separately as digital downloads. Check the license terms to see whether you can use them for work or client projects.
