About pos systems

A point-of-sale setup combines software with hardware: a touchscreen terminal or tablet with a stand, a receipt printer, a cash drawer, a barcode scanner, and sometimes a customer-facing display, kitchen printer, scale or label printer. Restaurants add kitchen display screens and order printers; retailers add scanners and label printers for inventory.

Compatibility is the main concern. POS software supports specific hardware models and connection types, such as USB, Ethernet, Bluetooth or serial. Receipt printers differ by paper width and whether they are thermal or impact; cash drawers usually connect through the printer. Card payment terminals are often tied to a specific payment provider and may need to be activated or approved by that provider.

Used POS hardware can be cost-effective, but check that it is supported by your software, that it has been reset, and that card-reading devices are permitted for reuse by the payment provider.

Buying POS hardware

  • Check your POS software's supported hardware list before buying.
  • Match connection types such as USB, Ethernet or Bluetooth to your setup.
  • Confirm receipt paper width and whether the printer is thermal or impact.
  • For used card terminals, check with your payment provider whether the device can be used with your account.
  • Ask whether used devices have been factory reset and cleared of previous data.

Questions about pos systems

Will this printer work with my POS software?

Check your software provider's compatibility list and the printer's connection type and model.

Can I buy a used card terminal?

Some card terminals are locked to a specific provider or account. Confirm with your payment provider before buying.

Do I need a thermal printer?

Thermal printers are quiet and fast and use heat-sensitive paper. Kitchens sometimes use impact printers because they tolerate heat better.
