About measuring instruments

Measuring instruments cover dimensional metrology, such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, dial and test indicators and gauge blocks; electrical test equipment, such as multimeters, clamp meters, insulation testers and oscilloscopes; environmental instruments like thermometers, hygrometers and moisture meters; pressure and flow gauges; and weighing scales.

The key specifications are range, resolution and accuracy, which are not the same thing. For many professional uses, calibration traceable to recognized standards is required, and instruments have calibration intervals. Electrical testers carry safety category ratings that indicate where they can be used safely.

Used instruments can be good value if they are in calibration or can be recalibrated. Ask for calibration certificates where they exist, and check the condition of jaws, anvils, probes and displays.

Buying measuring instruments

  • Compare range, resolution and stated accuracy, not just display digits.
  • Ask whether a calibration certificate is included and when it was issued.
  • For electrical testers, check the safety category rating matches your work.
  • Inspect photos of measuring faces, probes and leads on used instruments.
  • Choose trade-approved scales where you sell goods by weight, as local rules may require.

Questions about measuring instruments

What is the difference between resolution and accuracy?

Resolution is the smallest change a device displays; accuracy is how close its reading is to the true value. A high-resolution instrument is not automatically accurate.

Do I need a calibration certificate?

For quality systems and regulated work, often yes. For hobby use it may not matter. Check your requirements before buying.

Can I use any scale to sell by weight?

Many places require approved scales for trade. Check local rules.
