Necklaces start with the chain, and chain style determines both look and strength. Cable chains have simple oval links and are a versatile base for pendants. Box chains use square links and feel solid, rope chains twist links into a spiral, curb and Cuban links lie flat with a bolder profile, and snake and herringbone chains are smooth and fluid but can kink if bent sharply. Beaded, pearl and cord necklaces add texture and color without metal links.
Length is the next decision. Shorter collar and choker lengths sit high on the neck, the most common princess length rests near the collarbone, and longer matinee and opera lengths fall to the chest or below. Layering usually works when each strand is a different length and chain style so they do not tangle. Adjustable chains with extender links give you several lengths in one piece.
Clasps affect both security and ease of use. Spring ring clasps are small and common on fine chains, lobster clasps are sturdier and easier to open, toggle clasps make a decorative feature at the front or back, and magnetic clasps help people with limited dexterity, though they suit lighter pieces. Pearl strands are traditionally knotted between each pearl so a break does not scatter the whole strand.
Pendants and lockets may be sold with or without a chain, so read the listing carefully. Check the bail size if you plan to use your own chain, and look for the pendant dimensions as well as the metal of both pendant and chain, since they are not always the same.
Choosing a necklace
- Measure a necklace you already own or use a string around your neck to pick a length, and check whether an extender is included.
- Match chain strength to the pendant: a heavy pendant on a very fine chain can stretch or snap it.
- Check whether a pendant comes with a chain, and if not, what bail opening it has.
- Look at the clasp type, especially if you will be putting the necklace on alone every day.
- Confirm the metal of both chain and pendant, and whether either is plated, filled or solid.
Questions about necklaces
What necklace length should I choose?
It depends on your neckline and how you want it to sit. Shorter lengths sit at the base of the neck, mid-lengths rest on or just below the collarbone, and longer lengths fall to the chest. Sellers usually list length in inches or centimeters, and a piece of string can help you visualize it.
How do I stop layered necklaces from tangling?
Choose strands of clearly different lengths and chain styles, and pick heavier chains for the longest layer. Some people use a multi-strand connector clasp that keeps layers spaced apart.
Why did my necklace turn my skin green?
Copper in brass, some plated pieces and even some gold alloys can react with sweat and skin products, leaving a harmless green mark. Solid gold, platinum, sterling silver and stainless steel are less likely to do this. Keeping jewelry dry and clean helps.
