About casual watches

Casual watches are built for daily wear: easy to read, comfortable and tough enough for work, travel and weekends. Common styles include field watches with clear numerals, dive-style watches with rotating bezels, minimalist dials with clean markers, pilot watches with large numerals, and digital watches with alarms and timers. Many use quartz movements, which are accurate, affordable and low maintenance, while solar quartz recharges from light and affordable automatics appeal to people who like mechanical watches.

Size and fit make the biggest difference to comfort. Case diameter, lug-to-lug length and thickness all affect how a watch looks on your wrist, and a watch with a shorter lug-to-lug span often wears smaller than its diameter suggests. Lug width, the space between the lugs, tells you which straps will fit if you want to swap them later.

Materials vary widely. Stainless steel cases are durable, aluminum and resin are lightweight, and mineral crystals are common at lower cost while sapphire resists scratches better. Straps include leather, canvas, nylon, silicone and steel bracelets, each suiting different activities and climates.

Water resistance ratings help you know what a watch can handle. Basic ratings suit hand washing and rain, higher ratings can handle swimming, and dive-rated watches are built for more. Check the rating and keep the crown pushed in or screwed down before getting the watch wet.

Choosing an everyday watch

  • Compare case diameter and lug-to-lug length with your wrist, or with a watch you already own.
  • Note the lug width so you know which replacement straps will fit later.
  • Check the water resistance rating against how you plan to use it, from hand washing to swimming.
  • Decide between quartz, solar and automatic based on how much maintenance and winding you want.
  • Check strap length and material, and whether the seller includes spare links or a second strap.

Questions about casual watches

What watch size should I choose?

It depends on wrist size and personal taste. Lug-to-lug length is a better guide than case diameter alone: if the lugs extend past the edges of your wrist, the watch will look and feel large. Comparing measurements with a watch you already own helps.

Can I swim with a casual watch?

Only if its water resistance rating supports swimming. Lower ratings are meant for splashes and rain. Make sure the crown is fully pushed in or screwed down, and avoid pressing buttons underwater.

How often does a quartz watch battery need replacing?

It varies by movement and features, and many last a few years. Some watches show a low-battery signal, such as the seconds hand jumping several seconds at a time. Solar quartz watches recharge from light instead.
