Jewelry and watches cover a wide range of materials and price points, so the first thing to understand on any listing is what a piece is actually made of. Solid precious metal means the whole piece is gold, silver, platinum or palladium of a stated fineness. Gold-filled jewelry has a thick layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base metal, while gold-plated or vermeil pieces carry a much thinner electroplated layer that can wear through over time. Fashion jewelry is usually brass, stainless steel, zinc alloy or other base metals, often plated, and is designed for style rather than lasting value.
Fineness tells you how much precious metal an alloy contains. Gold is described in karats: 24-karat is nearly pure and soft, while 18-karat, 14-karat and 10-karat gold mix in other metals for strength and color, which is how white, yellow and rose gold are made. Sterling silver is marked 925, and platinum is often stamped PT or PLAT with its fineness. Many countries use hallmarks or quality stamps to show metal content and the maker, and a reputable seller will tell you what is stamped on a piece and where.
Gemstones add another layer of detail. A stone can be natural, lab-grown (chemically the same as the natural gem, created in a lab) or simulated (a look-alike such as cubic zirconia or glass). Many natural gems are routinely treated, for example heated, oiled, filled or diffused, to improve color or clarity, and treatments can affect care and value. Look for listings that name the stone, its origin type, any known treatment, its approximate size and its setting style.
Watches split broadly into quartz, which runs on a battery and keeps very consistent time, and mechanical, which is powered by a wound spring either by hand or by an automatic rotor that winds as you move. Case size, lug width, strap material and water resistance all affect how a watch wears day to day. On MultiVendor Market each shop is independent, so you can read a seller's description, check their policies and message them with questions before you buy.
Buying jewelry and watches from independent sellers
- Confirm the metal content in plain words: solid gold of a stated karat, sterling silver, gold-filled, vermeil, plated or stainless steel. Each wears and ages very differently.
- For any gemstone, check whether it is natural, lab-grown or simulated, and whether the seller discloses treatments such as heating or fracture filling.
- Check sizing before you order: ring size, chain length, bracelet inner circumference or watch case diameter and strap length.
- Ask about hallmarks or quality stamps and where they are on the piece, especially for vintage or higher-value items.
- Read the seller's returns policy, resizing policy and any notes on made-to-order or personalized items, which are often final sale.
- Look at how the piece will ship, including packaging, insurance and whether a signature is required for valuable parcels.
Questions about jewelry & watches
What is the difference between gold-filled, gold-plated and solid gold?
Solid gold is gold alloy all the way through. Gold-filled jewelry has a thick layer of gold bonded to a base metal core and can last for years with normal wear. Gold-plated jewelry has a thin electroplated layer that can rub off with friction, water and sweat. Vermeil is a heavier gold plating over sterling silver.
Is sterling silver good for everyday wear?
Yes, sterling silver is durable enough for daily wear, though it can tarnish when exposed to air, moisture and some chemicals. Regular wear and a soft polishing cloth usually keep it bright. Some pieces are rhodium-plated to slow tarnish.
Are lab-grown gemstones real?
Lab-grown diamonds and gems have the same chemical makeup and physical properties as their natural counterparts; they are simply grown in a controlled environment. Simulants such as cubic zirconia or moissanite used as a diamond alternative are different materials that look similar. A good listing says which one you are buying.
Can I ask a seller questions before buying jewelry?
Yes. Every listing on MultiVendor Market shows the shop that sells it, and you can message the seller directly to ask about sizing, metal, stones, care or custom work before you place an order.
