Licensed datasets are structured collections of data that the seller has the right to sell and that come with explicit terms of use. Buyers include data scientists building models, analysts enriching dashboards, researchers and product teams testing ideas.
Types include tabular business and product data, labeled text and image datasets for machine learning, audio and speech collections recorded with consent, sensor and time-series data, synthetic datasets generated to mimic real patterns, and curated compilations of open data cleaned and joined into a usable form.
Strong dataset listings include a data dictionary describing every field, the collection method, how labels were created, known gaps or biases, update frequency and a downloadable sample. The license should say whether you may train commercial models, ship the data in products or redistribute it.
Choosing a licensed dataset
- Read the data dictionary and download the sample before buying.
- Check how data was collected and, for people-related data, how consent and anonymization were handled.
- Look for known limitations, gaps or biases the seller discloses.
- Confirm the license covers your use, such as commercial model training.
- Check formats and size, and whether updates are part of the purchase as described.

Can I train a commercial AI model on a purchased dataset?
Only if the license explicitly allows it. Some datasets are for research or internal use only.
What is synthetic data?
Data generated by a process or model to resemble real data without containing actual records. It's useful when real data is sensitive, but check how closely it reflects real patterns.
Does the dataset include personal information?
Check the listing. Data about people should be anonymized or collected with a lawful basis. Ask the seller if it isn't clear.
