About yoga

Yoga courses combine postures (asana), breathing (pranayama) and relaxation, and they vary a lot by style. Hatha courses move at a steady pace and hold each pose to learn alignment. Vinyasa and flow courses link movement to breath in continuous sequences and build heat and stamina. Yin yoga holds passive floor poses for several minutes, while restorative yoga uses bolsters, blankets and blocks to support the body in deep rest. Chair yoga adapts practice for people who prefer or need to stay seated.

A good beginner yoga course starts with foundations: standing poses such as mountain, warrior and triangle, how to use props, safe forward folds and twists, sun salutations broken into steps, and how to modify poses for tight hamstrings, wrists or lower back. Later modules add balance poses, backbends, hip openers and longer flows. Some courses focus on themes such as yoga for runners, yoga for better sleep or morning routines.

There are also courses for experienced practitioners and aspiring teachers on anatomy for yoga, sequencing, cueing and yoga philosophy. As with any physical practice, talk to a doctor or qualified professional before starting if you are pregnant, injured or have a health condition, and never push into pain.

Choosing an online yoga course

  • Pick a style that suits your goal: hatha for learning alignment, vinyasa for a more active flow, yin or restorative for slow, quiet practice.
  • Beginners should look for a foundations module that breaks down key poses and shows modifications.
  • Check the props used, such as a mat, two blocks, a strap or a bolster, and whether household alternatives are suggested.
  • Watch the free preview lesson to see how clearly the teacher cues and whether the pace feels right.
  • If you are pregnant, injured or managing a condition, look for a specialized course and check with your doctor first.

Questions about yoga

Do I need to be flexible to start yoga?

No. Flexibility develops with practice. Beginner courses show modifications and props so you can work at your own range of motion.

What is the difference between yin and restorative yoga?

Both are slow. Yin holds floor poses for longer to gently stress connective tissue, while restorative yoga fully supports the body with props so you can relax with little effort.

Is yoga safe during pregnancy or after an injury?

It can be, with the right adaptations, but ask your doctor or midwife first and choose a course specifically designed for prenatal practice or your situation. Stop any pose that causes pain.
