Sound effects bring footage and games to life. Libraries in this category include field-recorded ambiences of cities and nature, foley such as footsteps and cloth, impacts and whooshes for trailers, interface sounds for apps and games, weapons-style designed sounds, creatures, vehicles and household objects.
Professional libraries are usually delivered as high-resolution WAV files with embedded metadata — descriptions, categories and keywords — so they're searchable in sound library tools. Some include both raw source recordings and designed versions, and many record at high sample rates so sounds can be pitched and stretched cleanly.
Most sound effects licenses are royalty-free for use in productions, including commercial films and games, but prohibit reselling the sounds as a library. Check the license and whether it covers a single user or a team.
Choosing a sound effects library
- Check the format, sample rate and bit depth; higher resolutions allow more processing.
- Look for embedded metadata so sounds are searchable in your library software.
- Listen to the preview reel for noise, clipping and variety within each category.
- Confirm the license covers your projects — film, games, apps, ads — and your team size.
- Note whether you get raw recordings, designed sounds, or both.
Questions about sound effects
Can I use sound effects in a commercial game?
Most SFX licenses allow use in finished productions, including games, but not resale of the raw sounds. Check the listing's license.
Why are sound effects recorded at high sample rates?
Higher sample rates keep more detail when sounds are slowed down or pitched, which sound designers often do.
Can my whole team use one library?
That depends on the license. Some are single-user; others offer team or studio options.
