About pilates equipment

Pilates equipment falls into two groups. Apparatus includes the reformer — a sliding carriage with springs, straps and a footbar — plus the Cadillac or trapeze table, wall towers, the Wunda or combo chair and spine correctors or ladder barrels. Mat Pilates uses smaller props: the magic circle or Pilates ring, soft mini balls, resistance bands, foam rollers and a mat that's usually thicker than a yoga mat to cushion the spine during rolling exercises.

Home reformers range from foldable models that store upright to studio-grade machines with wooden or aluminum frames. Studio-grade machines offer smoother carriage travel and more spring settings, but they're long and heavy. Used reformers from studios refreshing their equipment are a common way to get studio quality at home.

When choosing a reformer, compare frame length, carriage height, number and tension of springs, footbar positions and whether a jump board or tower can be added. Pilates is often used in rehabilitation, but equipment listings aren't medical advice — follow guidance from a qualified instructor or health professional.

Buying Pilates equipment

  • Measure the room for a reformer's full length plus space to step on and off, and check whether it folds or stands upright.
  • Ask how many springs it has, their tension levels and when they were last replaced on a used machine.
  • Check upholstery, ropes or straps, pulleys and carriage wheels for wear on secondhand apparatus.
  • Confirm which add-ons fit — jump boards, sitting boxes and towers are often specific to a frame.
  • For mat Pilates, choose a mat thick enough for rolling exercises and props sized for your height.

Questions about pilates equipment

Is a home reformer worth it?

If you take reformer classes regularly or want to practice at home, a reformer offers a wide range of exercises. Consider space, storage and whether you'll need instruction, through classes or an online course.

What should I check on a used Pilates reformer?

Ask about spring age, rope or strap condition, carriage glide and upholstery wear. Request a video of the carriage moving, and check what accessories are included.

What's the difference between a Pilates mat and a yoga mat?

Pilates mats are typically thicker and denser to cushion the spine during rolling and floor work, while yoga mats are thinner for standing balance.
