About cycling equipment

Cycling equipment covers what you bolt onto a bike and what you carry or wear while riding. Components include drivetrain parts such as chains, cassettes, derailleurs and cranks; brakes and pads; handlebars, stems, saddles and seatposts; and wheels, tires and inner tubes. Accessories include lights, locks, pumps, bottle cages, computers and bike bags for commuting and bikepacking.

Compatibility is the key challenge. Drivetrain speed count, freehub type, brake type (rim or disc, mechanical or hydraulic), axle standards, bottom bracket type, wheel size and tire width all need to match your bike. Good listings state these clearly, and independent bike shops can usually confirm fit if you send them your bike's details.

Helmets should meet the safety standard that applies where you ride and be replaced after a crash. Lights and electric-bike batteries may contain lithium cells, which have shipping rules. For safety-critical parts like brakes and steering, have them fitted by a qualified mechanic if you're unsure.

Buying bike parts and cycling gear

  • Confirm your bike's drivetrain speed count, wheel size, brake type and axle standard before ordering parts.
  • Check tire size markings on your current tire and the width your frame and fork can clear.
  • Choose a helmet that fits your head circumference and meets the safety standard where you ride.
  • For used components, ask about wear — chain stretch, cassette tooth shape, brake pad depth, bearing play.
  • Have brakes, steering and other safety-critical parts installed or checked by a qualified mechanic if unsure.
  • Message the shop with your bike's make, model and year to confirm compatibility.

Questions about cycling equipment

How do I know if a part fits my bike?

Check the listing for standards — speed count, wheel size, axle type, brake mount — and compare with your bike's specifications. If you're unsure, message the seller with your bike's details.

Is it safe to buy a used helmet?

It's generally not recommended, because you can't tell if a helmet has been in an impact. Buy new, and replace any helmet after a crash.

Can e-bike batteries be shipped?

Lithium batteries are subject to carrier and transport rules, so some sellers may offer only certain shipping methods or local pickup. Check with the seller.
