About outerwear

Outerwear covers the layers you wear outside everything else: tailored wool overcoats and peacoats, trench coats, quilted and puffer jackets, parkas, waxed cotton and rain shells, field and chore jackets, denim and leather jackets, fleece and vests. Independent sellers include outerwear makers working in wool, waxed cotton and leather, and vintage dealers with older military, workwear and tailored coats.

Warmth and weather protection come from materials and construction. Wool insulates even when damp and resists wind in dense weaves like melton. Down offers a lot of warmth for its weight, described by fill power, while synthetic insulation keeps working when wet. Rainwear ranges from water-resistant finishes to waterproof fabrics with taped seams; breathable membranes reduce clamminess. Leather and suede need conditioning and protection from heavy rain, and waxed cotton can be re-waxed.

Fit for outerwear should allow room for layers. Check shoulder width, chest, sleeve length and back length, and think about what you will wear underneath. Details like a two-way zipper, storm flap, adjustable hood, lined pockets and cuffs that seal out wind make a coat more practical in real weather.

Choosing a coat or jacket

  • Measure a coat you own and compare shoulder, chest, sleeve and back length, leaving room for the layers you wear underneath.
  • Check insulation type and amount, such as wool weight, down fill power or synthetic fill, to match your climate.
  • Look for the difference between water-resistant and waterproof, and whether seams are taped.
  • Check hardware and details: zippers, snaps, hood adjustment, storm flaps and pocket linings.
  • For vintage leather and wool coats, ask about lining condition, odor, moth damage and any repairs.

Questions about outerwear

What is down fill power?

Fill power describes how much space a given amount of down occupies. Higher fill power means more loft and warmth for the weight. Total warmth also depends on how much down the jacket contains.

Is a wool coat warm enough for winter?

A dense, heavy wool coat is warm in cold, dry weather, especially with layers underneath. For very cold or wet conditions, an insulated or waterproof coat may suit you better.

How should a winter coat fit?

It should close comfortably over a sweater, with sleeves reaching your wrist or a little past when your arms are bent. Compare shoulder and chest measurements with a coat you like.

How do I care for a leather jacket?

Wipe it clean, condition it occasionally, and let it dry naturally away from heat if it gets wet. Store it on a wide hanger to keep the shoulders in shape.
