About men's clothing

Men's clothing covers casual staples like tees, henleys, polos and sweatshirts; button-down, oxford and flannel shirts; chinos, work pants and jeans; knitwear from lightweight merino to chunky wool; and tailoring such as blazers and trousers. Independent menswear shops often focus on fabric and construction, offering details like selvedge denim, flat-felled seams, chain-stitched hems and natural shell or corozo buttons.

Shirt sizing may be given as small, medium and large, or by neck and sleeve measurement. Pants are often sized by waist and inseam, but the cut matters as much as the numbers: slim, straight, tapered and relaxed fits differ in thigh, knee and leg opening. Raw or unsanforized denim can shrink noticeably on the first wash and fades with wear, while sanforized and washed denim stays closer to its listed size.

To shop well, compare chest, shoulder, length and sleeve measurements against a shirt you like, and waist, rise, thigh and leg opening for pants. Fabric weight helps too: a heavyweight cotton tee or flannel holds its shape and lasts longer, while a lighter weight drapes and stays cooler. Vintage menswear, such as workwear, military surplus and older tailoring, often has generous cuts and sturdy construction.

Choosing men's clothing that fits

  • For shirts, compare shoulder width, chest and body length with a shirt that fits you, not just the S, M or L label.
  • For pants, check the waist, rise, thigh, inseam and leg opening, and note whether the fit is slim, straight, tapered or relaxed.
  • With denim, check whether it is raw, sanforized or pre-washed, and how much shrinkage the seller expects.
  • Look at fabric weight and composition to judge warmth, drape and durability.
  • Check construction details in close-up photos: seams, buttons, collar shape and stitching.
  • For vintage pieces, ask for measurements, since older sizing labels rarely match current ones.

Questions about men's clothing

What is the difference between raw and washed denim?

Raw denim has not been washed after dyeing, so it is stiff at first and fades to match how you wear it. Washed denim is pre-softened and pre-shrunk. Unsanforized raw denim can shrink noticeably, so sellers often advise sizing up or soaking it first.

How should a casual shirt fit?

The shoulder seam should sit at or near the edge of your shoulder, the chest should button without pulling, and the hem should cover your waistband when untucked. Compare the seller's shoulder and length measurements with a shirt you own.

Is merino wool good for everyday wear?

Merino is fine, soft and breathable, regulates temperature and resists odor, so many people wear it year-round. It needs gentle washing, usually cool and laid flat to dry.

Can I get trousers hemmed to my length?

Some menswear shops sell trousers unhemmed or offer hemming as an option. Check the listing or message the seller with your inseam.
