About home audio

Home audio covers everything from a single wireless speaker to a full hi-fi system: bookshelf and floorstanding speakers, stereo and AV amplifiers, turntables, streamers, CD players, soundbars and subwoofers. Independent sellers on MultiVendor Market include audio specialists, vintage restorers and enthusiasts who know their gear well and describe it in detail.

When building a system, match the parts. Check speaker impedance and sensitivity against the amplifier's output, make sure your amplifier has a phono stage if you are adding a turntable, and confirm the connections you need, such as optical, coaxial, HDMI ARC, Bluetooth or network streaming. Room size matters too: large speakers in a small room aren't always an improvement.

Vintage and used audio can sound excellent but needs honest description. Ask what has been serviced, whether capacitors or belts were replaced, and whether there is any channel imbalance, crackle or hum. Speakers and amplifiers are heavy, so look at how the seller packs them, and consider local pickup where offered.

Buying home audio

  • Match speakers and amplifiers — check impedance and power ratings, or ask the seller.
  • Check connections: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, optical, HDMI ARC, phono input for turntables.
  • For vintage gear, ask what's been serviced or replaced.
  • Speakers are heavy and fragile: check packing and shipping before buying.
  • Ask about returns if you want to try speakers in your room.

Questions about home audio

Do I need a separate phono preamp for a turntable?

Only if your amplifier or speakers don't have a phono input and the turntable has no built-in preamp. Check both listings or ask the seller.

What should I ask about vintage hi-fi?

Ask what has been serviced or replaced, whether both channels work evenly, and whether there is noise when controls are turned. Photos of the back panel help confirm connections.

Are speakers sold as a pair?

It varies. Many sellers offer a pair or single option on one listing, so check which you're selecting before you buy.
