About desktop applications

Desktop applications run locally on your computer rather than in a browser. Independent developers sell everything from text and image editors to file converters, screen tools, audio utilities, hobby software and specialist apps for a single profession.

Desktop apps are usually distributed as platform-specific installers — an EXE or MSI for Windows, a DMG or PKG for macOS, and packages such as DEB, RPM or AppImage for Linux. Some are portable apps that run without installing. Processor architecture matters too: some builds support only Intel or only Apple silicon or ARM machines.

Look for a trial or demo, screenshots of the real interface and a clear changelog. A developer who explains how their app is signed or notarized, what permissions it needs and how licensing is activated is one you can trust more easily.

Choosing desktop applications

  • Check that a build exists for your operating system version and processor architecture.
  • Try the demo or trial build before buying, and read the changelog for recent updates.
  • Find out how the license activates — a key, a license file or an account — and how many computers it covers.
  • Check what permissions the app asks for, such as file access or accessibility features, and why.
  • Scan the installer with security software and watch for operating system warnings about unsigned apps.

Questions about desktop applications

Why does my computer warn me about opening an app?

Operating systems warn about apps that aren't signed or notarized, or were downloaded from the internet. Check with the seller that the file is genuine and scan it before proceeding.

Can I install the app on more than one computer?

That depends on the license. Some cover one device, others several devices for one user. The listing states the terms.

Is there a Windows and a Mac version?

The listing shows supported platforms. Some sellers offer each platform as an option, others include all builds in one download.
