CNC files give woodworkers, sign makers and small workshops a head start. Instead of drawing a design, you import a vector or relief file into your CAM software, choose your tools and generate toolpaths for your own machine.
Common types include 2D vectors for profile cuts, pockets and V-carved lettering; 3D relief models and height maps for carved panels and decorative work; nested flat-pack furniture and storage designs cut from sheet goods; inlay sets; and fixture or jig files for production work. Some sellers include CAM project files set up for particular bits.
Because every machine and tool setup differs, most sellers provide geometry rather than ready-to-run G-code. Check the material thickness a design assumes, the smallest bit that can cut its details, and whether joints are drawn for a specific sheet thickness. Always run new files with care and follow your machine's safety guidance.
Before you buy CNC files
- Check the formats against your CAM software — DXF and SVG for 2D work, STL or height maps for 3D reliefs.
- Note the material thickness the design was drawn for, especially for slot-together furniture.
- Look for the minimum bit size needed to cut fine details.
- Ask whether toolpaths or G-code are included; most designs expect you to generate your own.
- Read the license if you plan to sell the signs or pieces you cut.
Questions about cnc files
Can I run the file directly on my machine?
Usually not. Most CNC files are design geometry that you import into CAM software to create toolpaths for your machine, bits and material.
What if my plywood is a different thickness?
Slot and tab joints must match your sheet. Some designs are parametric or offered in several thicknesses; otherwise you may need to adjust slot widths in your software.
Can I sell what I make from CNC files?
Only if the license allows commercial use. Many sellers offer a commercial option for small workshops.
