About character assets

Character assets let developers populate a game without modeling and animating every hero, enemy and townsperson themselves. They range from realistic and stylized 3D characters with skeletons and animation sets to pixel art sprite sheets and illustrated portraits for dialogue.

Listings include complete rigged characters, creature and enemy packs, modular kits where heads, outfits and gear swap, animation libraries for walking, combat and idle loops, and 2D sprite sheets with frame layouts. Some characters are rigged to common humanoid skeletons so animations can be shared.

Check polygon count and texture resolution for your platform, the rig type and whether it supports animation retargeting, which animations are included, and for sprites the frame size and directions. License terms matter: most allow use in your game but not redistributing the character files.

Choosing character assets

  • Check polygon count, texture resolution and LODs against your target platform.
  • Confirm the rig type and whether it retargets to your animation setup.
  • List the included animations and check they loop cleanly in the preview.
  • For sprites, check frame size, number of directions and sheet layout.
  • Read the license for commercial games and modification rights.

Questions about character assets

Can I modify a purchased character?

Most licenses allow modifying characters for your game. Redistributing the modified source files is usually still not allowed.

Will animations from another pack work on this character?

If both use a compatible humanoid skeleton, retargeting often works. Check the rig description or ask the seller.

Are sprite sheets ready for my engine?

Most engines slice sprite sheets by frame size. The seller should list frame dimensions and layout.
