Car electronics upgrade a vehicle's entertainment, convenience and awareness. Head units replace the factory radio and come in single-DIN and double-DIN sizes, from simple media receivers to touchscreen units with phone mirroring, navigation and inputs for cameras. Car audio upgrades add component or coaxial speakers, subwoofers in sealed or ported boxes, amplifiers and sound-deadening material for doors and trunks.
Awareness and recording gear includes front and rear dash cams with parking mode, backup cameras, blind-spot and parking sensors, and tire pressure monitors. Convenience items include phone mounts, wireless chargers, USB power outlets, GPS units and remote starters.
Most installs need vehicle-specific parts: a wiring harness so you don't cut factory wires, a dash kit to fit the opening, antenna adapters and steering-wheel control interfaces. Check local rules on screens visible to the driver and on recording with dash cams, and use a qualified installer for amplifiers, hardwired cameras and anything touching airbags or the vehicle's network.
Choosing car electronics
- Check head unit size and dash compatibility for your vehicle.
- Find the wiring harness and adapters needed for installation.
- Check local rules on dash cam placement and recording.
- Compare speaker sizes and power handling.
- Use a qualified installer for complex wiring.
Questions about car electronics
Will this head unit fit my car?
Check whether your dash opening is single-DIN or double-DIN, and whether your vehicle needs a dash kit, wiring harness or steering-wheel control adapter. Message the seller with your year, make, model and trim to confirm.
Are dash cams legal where I drive?
Rules on dash cam placement, windshield obstruction and recording audio or other people vary by place. Check local regulations before installing.
Do I need an amplifier for new speakers?
Many replacement speakers run fine from a head unit. Subwoofers and higher-power component speakers usually need an amplifier. Compare the speaker's power handling with your head unit's output.
