About wall art

Wall art covers anything made to hang on a wall: original paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolor; drawings and mixed media; screen prints, linocuts, etchings and giclée prints; fine art photography; posters; and textile pieces such as macramé and woven hangings. Independent artists and printmakers sell directly on MultiVendor Market, so you can see who made the work and ask them about it.

For prints, the details matter: edition size, paper type, printing method, whether it is signed and whether it comes framed. For originals, ask about medium, surface, varnish and whether it is ready to hang. Size is the biggest decision for most buyers, especially when planning a gallery wall.

Buying art can also include framing. Some sellers offer framing as an option, while others ship unframed prints rolled or flat.

Choosing wall art and prints

  • Check the size of the artwork and, separately, the size with frame or mount.
  • For prints, read the edition size, paper, printing method and whether it is signed.
  • For originals, ask about medium, surface and whether it is varnished and ready to hang.
  • Check whether framing is offered as an option and what glazing is used.
  • Keep art out of direct sunlight and damp to protect colors and paper.
  • Ask how the work is packed, whether flat or rolled, and how long it will take to ship.

Questions about wall art

What is the difference between an original and a print?

An original is the unique artwork the artist made. A print is a reproduction or an artwork made through a printmaking process, sometimes in a limited, numbered edition.

Can I order a print framed?

Many sellers offer framing as an option. If not, message the artist or take the print to a local framer.

Can I commission a piece from an artist?

Some artists accept commissions. Message them through their shop to ask about size, timeline and process.
