About photo editing

Photo editing courses go beyond basic adjustments into detailed, pixel-level work: removing distractions, retouching skin, correcting color, swapping skies and building composites. They suit photographers who want polished final images, ecommerce sellers who need clean product photos and designers who work with photography.

Foundational modules cover non-destructive editing with layers and adjustment layers, layer masks, selection tools, blend modes, the healing, clone and patch tools, content-aware fills and cropping and perspective correction. Color modules explain levels and curves, color balance, hue and saturation, selective color, matching color between images and calibrated monitors.

Retouching modules teach skin work with frequency separation and careful dodge and burn, removing blemishes while keeping texture, eye and hair cleanup and liquify used with restraint. Other courses cover product retouching and background removal, compositing with matched light and perspective, restoring old or damaged photos and preparing files for print with sharpening and color profiles.

Editing apps vary, and many techniques transfer between them. Choose a course that teaches in the app you use or explains concepts in a portable way, and look for practice files that match your genre, whether portraits, products or landscapes.

Choosing a photo editing course

  • Check which editing app the course uses and whether its techniques carry over to your software.
  • Look for non-destructive methods, such as adjustment layers and masks, rather than edits baked into a single layer.
  • Choose a genre-focused course for portrait, product, real estate or restoration work if that is your goal.
  • Make sure practice files are included and that you are free to use them for learning.
  • For portrait work, look for an instructor who teaches natural retouching that keeps skin texture.
  • If you print your work, choose a course that covers color profiles, sharpening and output settings.

Questions about photo editing

What is frequency separation?

It is a retouching technique that splits an image into a layer with fine texture and a layer with color and tone, so you can smooth blotchy color without destroying skin texture. Portrait retouching courses usually teach it alongside dodge and burn.

Is photo editing different from Lightroom editing?

Lightroom-style apps are designed for organizing and adjusting many photos. Photo editing courses here focus on layer-based, pixel-level work such as retouching and compositing, which is usually done in a separate editor.

Do I need a drawing tablet?

It is not required, but many retouchers prefer a pen tablet for masking and dodge and burn. Courses usually note whether the instructor uses one and how to work with a mouse.

Can I learn to restore old photos?

Yes. Restoration courses cover scanning, repairing tears, dust and scratches with healing and cloning, correcting faded color and rebuilding missing areas.
